Based in Exeter, Piran specialises in portraits in oil and he studied under the late Robert Lenkiewicz between 1994 and 2002. 25 years ago Raymond Briggs was Bishop's personal tutor and remembered him as "a bright light amid the grey mass of students at Brighton... Completely barmy, of course, but a bit of a genius" - quote taken from Briggs to Iain Poulson (author of the 2004 academic paper, 'Investigating the Portraiture of Piran Bishop and Robert Lenkiewicz: Fashioning the Self, the Sitter and the Influence of Others').

The paintings show the sensitive handling of tone, shape and colour that characterizes all of Bishop's work.
