"I have been making pots since 1968. I studied at York School of Art and was a pupil of David Lloyd Jones, an important figure in the post war British Pottery movement. I went on to gain a first class honours degree at Cardiff College of Art (now UWIC ) where I currently work as a Technical Demonstrator in the ceramics dept. My work has always been strongly linked to function although it is not always strictly utilitarian Most of my work is thrown in porcelain and is fired in a reducing atmosphere in a gas kiln. The work reflects a liking for detail and precision and I utilize turning to add refinement which enhances these qualities, seeking clean lines and strong profiles. Sometimes I endeavour to combine my liking for the mechanical elements of the making with the inherent softness of the clay in the same piece, as in the dimpled jar series. Handles are extruded and rolled on a variety of surfaces often taking on a blend of the mechanical and organic simultaneously. The glaze is selected to allow as much detail as possible to remain and to retain and promote the clarity of the making process."
