Christine Kaltoft

Having won the Goldsmith's Company first prize for her BA work in 2007, Christine Kaltoft has become a highly collectable and sought after jeweller exhibiting work throughout the UK and in top London exhibitions. In 2009 she has been selected to exhibit at Goldsmith's Fair, Origin, Brilliance 2009, and Lustre, as well as other well known events. Christine has been featured in the Telegraph Weekend, Good Housekeeping & Retail Jeweller.

"My inspiration comes from movements and sounds: the exuberant flapping of freshly freed hens, the ebb and flow of the dance class, the buzzes and beeps of city streets.

 I translate these experiences firstly into quick sketches, and then into pieces of jewellery that capture a sense of the energy of those experiences, be that bursting or flowing, simple and elegant, or complex and layered.

 My jewellery graphically represents my feelings about and memory of the movements and sounds. Perhaps because of this graphic quality, people often 'read' my jewellery, and their interpretations fascinate me, sometimes providing a further source of inspiration. I like the idea that my jewellery invokes memories and imaginative thought, that it has a story, and isn't just a show of financial wealth.

 I work mostly in fine gold and silver wires, soldering and welding them, forging them, and sometimes highlighting them with precious stones or providing a backdrop of non-precious materials such as wood."
